For the Bekku

Everything is better with a Bekku.

Bekkus are mysterious interdimensional creatures who grace our world with their presence. We usually perceive them as small bundles of furry randomness, upsetting the usual probability patterns of how matter and space interact.

A bekku that appears in the corner of your eye, may compress itself into a flash of a tail, or a couple of hind legs which vanish into nothingness as you turn around to observe it better. There's a reason why Schrodinger used a bekku for his experiment. A bekku is the epitome of a collapsing wave function -- you can never tell what its actual physical state is. When you go closer, you can either observe its position or measure its dimensions. You cannot do both.

Despite their ephemeral nature, bekkus play very concrete roles in our lives, usually for the better. Firstly, they are an endless source of amusement. If you're ever feeling down, just watch a bekku's two choopu kiwis flicker back and forth on the top of its head as it listens for changes in the rhythms of the universe. With two bekkus (or four choopu kiwis), it's even nicer.

They'll never admit it (and our science is not good enough to catch it), but a bekku's choopu kiwi can pick up the subtlest ripples of gravitational waves from colliding neutron stars fifty million light-years away. It's why they sometimes go crazy. When a bekku runs around your house, upsetting all your plans to keep a clean space, it's usually excited by a cosmic event on the other side of the known universe.

Of course, bekkus also make the best living decorations. No home is complete without a bekku bending time and space to imitate an inert table drenched in sunlight. IKEA is now open in India, but it will be a while before they can advertise anything that can compete with a bekku on the bookshelf. Furthermore, unlike IKEA furniture, you don't have to assemble anything from scratch. Bekkus are quite happy to begin with the scratching themselves.

The most important thing to remember though, is that no matter how homely or settled-in a bekku might seem to you, every bekku at heart is an interdimensional being of the deep. They are mysterious creatures of the night, adept at adopting the shadows for their own. They do not answer to you, even if they fool you into thinking so. A bekku will come and go as it pleases. When it chooses to visit the outer realms, you have no power to give it or deny it permission.

So treat your bekku with care and respect. You never know when such beings can come to your aid.

In case you haven't gotten it yet, bekkus are cats. 'Bekku' (ಬೆಕ್ಕು) is the Kannada word for cat.
